Nigeria should have gone ahead after Ahmed Musa was felled in the area, but Mikel Obi missed from the spot, as the first half ended goalless.
The Super Eagles stepped it up in the second half and were rewarded, after Obi won a tackle and slid in Emmanuel Emenike. The striker took one touch and buried his effort past Kennedy Mweene.
The game was panning out to be a first victory for Keshi’s men at the competition, before the referee penalised Onazi Ogenyi and awarded Zambia a penalty.
Mweene stepped up and struck his kick into the roof of the net in the 85th minute, to earn the defending champions a draw in Nelpruit.
Both teams will now wait till their last group games to find out their fate in the tournament.
