'Fifa has treated Suarez unfairly' - Cavani

The Paris Saint-Germain attacker has hit out at the decision to ban his compatriot from all football related activity for four months

Uruguay international Edinson Cavani feels Fifa was right to punish Luis Suarez for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup - but believes the new Barcelona signing's sanction is too severe.

The 27-year-old was not only handed a nine-match international suspension and a hefty fine following the incident in the Group D game in Brazil, but was also banned from all football related activity for four months.

Cavani has acknowledged that his compatriot crossed a line with his behaviour - the third time he has been guilty of a biting offence in his career - but he feels no footballer deserves to be isolated for such a long period.

"Luis was definitely in the wrong and it's good that he was punished," Cavani was quoted as saying by El Observador. 

"But I feel that the sanction handed to him is not appropriate. They threw him out of the World Cup and have forbidden him to set foot on a football pitch.

"No footballer deserves to be treated like that. They handled Luis' situation in an aggressive manner. The punishment really affected the national team. 

"Mistakes are made in football, but it is easy to talk from the outside and to be judged by people who have never kicked a ball."

Suarez recently completed his €88 million transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona, but the attacker will not be allowed to play for the Liga giants until October 26 due to his suspension.
