However, many members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), now controlling the state, have shown interest to vie for the plum seat when the three months tenure of the acting governor elapses.
This is even as former Lagos State military administrator, Buba Marwa, on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 told PDP delegates from Central Senatorial Zone of his intention to contest the bye-election for the vacant seat occasioned by the exit of Nyako.
Marwa, who had a meeting with the 339 PDP delegates from the zone, assured them that President Goodluck Jonathan is not going to hand pick a candidate for PDP in the forth coming bye- election.
He stressed that both the President and National Chairman of the party, Adamu Mu’azu had assured him of their resolve to allow voters elect their candidate without undue interference.
“I am aware that some of you are worried that Abuja will nominate a candidate for the party. I assure you that no such plan is being anticipated. I met with the President and asked him directly about the issue and he gave me his words. I also discussed the matter with the national chairman. Both the President and the chairman want a candidate to emerge through election”.
Marwa, however, warned that the electorate will reject any attempt to subvert the right of the people to determine their candidate through a democratic process, even as some members have expressed fears that some powerful politicians may influence Abuja to impose their chosen candidate on the party irrespective of popularity.
