Katherine Heigl is hoping to make a serious comeback.
The actress, who is returning to TV in NBC’s anticipated State of Affairs, spoke to Marie Claire U.K. about some of her damaging career choices that left her angry at the industry.

"This thing that was my best friend for a long time suddenly turned on me," she said of the Hollywood machine. "And I didn’t expect it. I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me."

While the 35-year-old may have felt betrayed, it also appeared that she bit the hand that fed her, leading her to garner a bad reputation in the biz.

Heigl publicly criticized the show that made her red hot in Hollywood,Grey’s Anatomy, by bashing the writing. She also trashed Knocked Up — which helped in her transition from television star to movie star — deeming the film sexist.

"I had an amazing time. I love romantic comedies. I was so stoked to be doing them. But maybe I hit it a little too hard. I couldn’t say no," Heigl reflected.

After the 2007 hit Knocked Up, to say Heigl took the rom-com route is an understatement. She went on to star in 27 DressesThe Ugly Truth,KillersLife as We Know It, and One for the Money, each commercially less successful than the one that came before.

"There’s nothing wrong with them, but maybe I overloaded my audience," Heigl admitted, taking partial blame. "I should have done a superhero movie or a psychological thriller."

It’s probably not a coincidence that when Heigl ended her run on Grey’s Anatomy in 2010, that coincided with the Ashton Kutcher flop Killers, which she never quite recovered from.

"I stopped challenging myself. It became a bit by rote and, as a creative person, that can wear you down," she told the mag. "That was part of why I took that time off, to ask myself, ‘What do I want? What am I looking for?’ and shut down all the noise."

Aside from supporting roles in New Year’s Eve and The Big Wedding, Heigl retreated from the limelight to spend time with her family — she and husband Josh Kelley adopted daughters Naleigh in 2009 and Adalaide in 2012 — and reevaluate her career goals.

"Oh yeah, I had a moment where, I don’t know, I was thinking I’d maybe open a knitting store, get my money out of retirement accounts and live off that, live off the land," the actress revealed. "I had my moment where it all seemed so complicated and all I wanted to do was simplify."

But she wasn’t ready to quit acting just yet. In her return to TV this fall inState of Affairs, Heigl plays a CIA analyst.

"There’s a part of me that’s a Hollywood animal as well. I can’t wait to get into the writer’s room and see how we do this," she explained. "I feel like I’m finally rolling into the next phase of my adulthood."

It remains to be seen whether this new phase can make Heigl a TV darling once again.
