Nigeria’s entertainment industry has witnessed some break-ups recently and in the time past. Musical groups that made waves are known to have parted ways over irreconcilable differences.
Some members of groups that broke up believe it will show who among them can survive alone musically. The list is endless…
Don Jazzy and D”banj
Michael Collins, popularly known as Don Jazzy and Dapo ‘D’banj’ Oyebanjo recorded tremendous success in propagating the gospel of music, especially the hip-hop music genre.
In the years they worked together, they reshaped the industry with hip-hop artistes on the label such as Wande Coal, Dr SID D’Prince and K-Switch, among others. They took their recording label Mo’ Hits Recordsto the next level and then gbam! They are no longer together.
Don Jazzy tweeted on March 17 that he and D”banj are no longer together. He announced on tweeter: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end of a long era and the beginning of a new one. Some of the rumours you have all heard recently are sad but true. The way forward now is to make sure I keep bringing you guys more of the beautiful music y’all love to dance to. And to end the old era, I will be donating the proceeds of my production catalog from day 1 till date to 5 charity organizations.”

The hip-hop group which included Ahmedu ‘Blackface’ Augustine, Innocent ‘2face’ Idibia and Chibuzor Orji otherwise called Faze, started off in the late 1990s and had three hits – Body And Soul, Sold Out and Plan B – to their credit. But along the line, the band broke up and went their separate ways to launch solo careers.
2Face Idibia later became the only member of the band with a striving career, winning awards such as The MTV Europe Music Award, Mobo, Kora and Hip-hop World Awards and others.
Kush
Kush was made up of Ty Bello, Lara George, Emem Ema and Dapo Toromino. The quartet met at Rock Solid Choir while studying at the University of Lagos. Their debut album was titled The Experience. Later on, a record label in US called DKG music signed them on. The album was produced in London, Minneapolis and Los Angeles. The group split in 2004.
KC Presh
In 2011, a hip-hop duo known as KC Presh broke up after several years of performing together. KC and Presh had issued a statement claiming that their break-up was a strategy to pursue solo careers after being together for 12 years. They came into the limelight as winners of the 2002 Star Quest.
The Remedies
This group is one that many identified with as being among the pioneers of the hip-hop genre. The group comprised Tony Tetuila, Idris Abdulkareem and Eddy ‘Montana’ Brown. The group’s songs Judile and Sakomo launched them into stardom.
X-Project
The trio of the Lorile fame popularly called X-Project is another group that has separated. It had Mojeed Akinwoye, Salieu Zindi and Aziz Kamara. Report indicated that the group split when its leader decided to quit.
Trybesmen
This group had five members including Eldee, Kaboom and Freestyle who were the initial members and later joined by OlaDele and TKO. Their fhit singles Trybal Marks and Shake Bodi made waves in the music scene.
Till date only two members of the group, eLDee and Freestyle went ahead to record solo albums after the group broke up. One will also recall the duo of Esther ‘E-Star’ Ebigbo and Uche ‘Gucheano’ Ozoigbo, popularly
Maintain
This group which released hits like I Catch Cold, I am looking for a Wifey, Alo and Dormitilla, made a great impact on the music terrain while it lasted.
After their exit, its members Olu, Tolu and Bamo launched individual music careers with Olu Maintain seeming to be the most successful, musically, among the trio.
Infinity
The gospel group, Infinity shot to stardom with Olorioko and is still trying to assert itself despite the fact that one of its pioneering members, Kore has left the group.
