As preparations hit top gears for the 2015 elections, Northern Christian leaders in Kaduna have vowed that they would do everything humanly possible to stop the emergence of a Muslim president from the North since the region had produced muslims leaders since 1960.
The group, under the aegis of Northern States’ Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF), said they would put all hands on deck to ensure a christian emerges winner in 2015.
NOSCEF in a statement issued at the end of an emergency meeting in Kaduna and jointly signed by its chairman, Evangelist Mathew Owojaiye and the secretary General, Mr Iliya Yusuf, said: “The region had had enough of Muslim national leaders since independence to the disadvantage of the Christian community.
They further noted that among the heads of state and presidents produced by the Northern region, only Gen. Yakubu Gowon was a Christian.
They observed that even those that were democratically elected were Muslims with much backups by the Christians.
The statement listed the past leaders from the North to be Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, General Yakubu Gowon, General Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, General Sani Abacha, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua.
“You can see that out of these nine persons, the Northern Christians produced only one; that is, General Yakubu Gowon. If we are to consider elective presidents, we had Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua.
“The Northern Muslims have produced three elective presidents. The Christians from the North have produced none. Justice, equity, fairness show that the next president of Nigeria from the North must be a Christian. Nothing less than that should happen,” the communique said.
