Nigeria’s Federal government has rejected the prisoner-swap conditions laid down by Abubakar Shekau, the Boko Haram leader for the release of the 234 schoolgirls kidnapped by the militant sect over three weeks ago.
In a video released on Monday, claiming to show about 130 of the abducted schoolgirls, Shekau stated that the girls will be released once Nigeria sets free all militant prisoners in its custody.
“We will never release them (the girls) until after you release our brethren.”
The leader of the sect also stated that some of the girls have converted from Christianity to Islam.
Responding to questions on whether the FG would give in to the demands by Boko Haram, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Abba Moro told AFP,
“The issue in question is not about Boko Haram… giving conditions.”
He added that the government would reject those conditions.
This is not the first time Shekau would be making a demand for the release of his “brethren” in government custody, having reportedly done same in 2011 through an open letter to the governor of Kano state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as well as in the video released last week where he claimed responsibility for the kidnap of the Chibok girls.
